National Boating Association of Maldives has stated that there is no specific value stated to give for service charge. They also stated that in order to correct this, rules must be reviewed and changed.
NBMA’s secretory general Mr. Mohamed Ignaz Ali stated that the current law states that if the service charge has been taken, it should be paid to the employees. Currently, the amount is not fixed therefore there is no point in protesting as per the law.
NBAM also praises the work of Tourism Minister Mr. Ali Waheed and his efforts which made the Maldivian Tourism better than before. Maldivian tourism has become a solid economy plus investors and tourists as well as Maldivians love the industry now, they added.
Even though NBMA stated this, a lot of criticism is directed to the Tourism Minister as well as the industry itself. When service charges are given in insanely low amounts, a lot of employees working in resorts are raising their voices against the resorts. Some of them are protesting as well. A lot of photos have been circulating in social media showing the low standards their staffs are subjected to live. 15-20 staffs are living under one roof using just one toilet which does not even have a lock.
The main concerns of the employees are to give the rightful service charge amounts as well as show them liveable places while working in resorts.
