Maldivian Government Signs Agreement to Build Floating Islands

Dutch Docklands, a Holland-based company has signed with the Maldivian government to carry out the 5 Lagoons Project – A series of man-made floating islands, for the second time.

The joint venture focuses on building floating islands across the Maldives hopefully to solve the imminent environmental crisis the country could face in the coming 50 years.

In 2010, during the presidency of Mohamed Nasheed, the former Economic Minister, Mr. Mohamed Rasheed signed with Dutch Docklands for the same project; to utilize floating technology to build floating islands in 5 locations in Kaafu Atoll during a period of 50 years. However, the project was unable to take place due to unknown circumstances.

After 9 years, the project is now to become a reality. Last Thursday at a special meeting conducted at the Ministry of Tourism, Dutch Docklands and State Minister Dr Ahmed Solih on behalf of the government signed an agreement to re-establish the project. Ambassador of Holland to the Maldives and Sri Lanka was among the attendees.

Further details about the project have yet to be announced.
