The Higher Education loan was granted to only 46 students out of the 546 who applied for it, according to yesterday’s announcement by the Ministry of Education.
With just 8% of the total students receiving the loan, there were even some areas and programs where no students were selected.
From the most popular category where students can choose the country of study, only 30 students were granted the loan from 332 who applied for it. For the pilot training program, 5 students were selected from the 184 who applied for it.
Ministry of Higher Education stated that they will inform the selected students about further instructions via email between 11th and 12th of this month.
In 2017, during Abdulla Yameen’s presidency, 600 students were granted the Higher Education Loan. In 2016 and the year before, 500 and 400 students respectively, were granted the loan.
It was one of the presidential promises of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, that the first degree will be granted to Maldivian students for free under the Bachelor’s Degree Grant scheme. However, the appropriate financial arrangements have yet to be made for the students who applied.
