The Maldives won the bid to host the 11th Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) in 2023.
IOIG is a multi-sport event held every four years among Indian Ocean island nations. The Maldives is one of the founding members alongside with Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte and Réunion.
During the bid Reunion, Mauritius and Seychelles voted for the Maldives while Madagascar and Comoros voted for themselves.
While announcing the news, President Solih tweeted “it is fitting that we return the hospitality and extended to us by our fellow island nations.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid also tweeted “Warmest welcome to our sisters & brothers from Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros, Réunion & Mayotte to our shores!”
