The health Ministry of the Maldives announced that the upcoming week will complete sending of ambulances to 20 islands.
The ministry further reassured that, the first shipment of 20 ambulances, which were acquired through STO, will be sent to the islands after the completion of the administrative process within the upcoming week.
There were complaints regarding the halt of ambulance services in the islands due to wrecked ambulances. Specially during the peak of Covid-19, many islands faced major challenges as some islands had no ambulance service or having worn-out ones. Recently, public criticized the government as a video of a patient transported in a wheel burrow in H.Dh Makunudhoo went viral.
One of the main goals of this government is to provide ambulance services to 60 islands. Earlier, the president’s office had stated that, within next two months 40 new ambulances will be acquired and they will be sent to islands before the end of this year.
Health Minister Mr Ahmed Naseem stated that, there are 3 ways the ambulances are obtained to the islands. They are; from the ministry’s budgets, Aid from the government of Japan and via other aid programs. However, no further details were specified regarding the aid programs.
During this month, the government of Japan has provided 46.3 million Maldivian Rufiya in order to expand sea ambulance service in the Maldives. Through this aid, sea ambulances with be bought and training staffs for emergency services will be held.
