Chair of the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee, North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy has revealed 422 people are living freely without serving their sentences due to negligence on the part of the government.
The Judiciary Committee has obtained details of those who have not been sentenced in connection with the case of those who withheld their passports until the end of their trial.
According to information from correctional service, Chair of the Judiciary Committee Imthiyaz Fahmy said that there are 422 people who have not been sentenced.
This includes those sentenced in 2006 and those sentenced this year, he said.
He said that most of the sentences were handed down in absentia in the past in accordance with the Constitution.
He said that the reason for the question was that the sentence was not implemented and that he did not know what had been done to implement it.
He said that the passports of 287 individuals who were sentenced in a manner that violates the Constitution have been withheld.
He said that the Home Ministry would request yesterday to find out who has now withheld their passports.
He said that the committee will compile the report and submit it to the parliament floor to see if the previous sentences were illegal.
