Twopeoplehavebeenarrestedforassaulting the Magistrate CourtguardinNeykurandhoo.MPSconfirmedthearrestoftwoMaldivianmen,aged29and34.Themenassaultedthe60-year-oldguardwhilehewasonhiswaytohisduty,ataboutmidnight.Hesustainedseverelegandheadinjuries.HewasmovedfromtheNeykurandhoohealthcentertothekulhudhuffushihospitalduetotheheadinjuries.EffortstotransferthepatienttoMale’forfurthermedicaltreatmentareunderway.MPSclaimedthattheywerefurtherinvestigatingthiscase.
Climate Emergency in the Maldives
ParliamentpassedaresolutiononWednesdaydeclaringMaldivesaclimateemergency.Theresolution,tabledbyHoarafushiMPAhmedSaleem,seekstodrawglobalattentiontotheneedtomitigateclimatechangebeforetimerunsoutfortheworld.Duringitsreview,theCommitteeontheEnvironmentandClimateChangemadeseveralamendmentstotheresolution,oneofwhichwastorecognizetheeffectsofclimatechangefeltasemergenciesinMaldives. Thechangewasmadeamidpublicconcernaboutextremeerosionfeltinanumberofislandsduetoclimatechangeaswellastheobstructionofsandproductionandmovementdueto arbor andotherinfrastructureprojects.TherevisedresolutionwasadoptedonWednesdayafternoon,withthe voteof68parliamentarians.Climateemergenciessofarhavebeenproclaimedbyhundredsoflocalgovernmentsand25individualcountries,thefirstofwhichwasannouncedin2016.
