The current president of the parliament and former president of Maldives. Mohamed Nasheed has decided to reduce MVR 85,000 from his presidential allowance.
The constitution defines that all the former president of the Maldives must receive an allowance of MVR 172,000 pension money to ensure their security and safety.
The secretary general of Parliament Fathimath Niusha, talking about Nasheed’s decision to reduce his allowances stated that Mr Nasheed intends to receive no more than that the government provides for his safety and security. Which also includes the MVR 87,000 he receives as the president of the parliament.
She also stated that Nasheed further requested to reduce his financial allowance of MVR 75,000 completely, including his living allowance of MVR 10,000. Nasheed will now receive a total of MVR 160,000.
Former presidents of the Maldives who receives the presidential allowances include Mohamed Nasheed, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Dr Mohamed Waheed and Abdullah Yameen.
