An accused suspect of human trafficking who hires employees from lucrative employers to be sent to the Maldives has been arrested in India.
Some Indian media revealed that in an investigation carried out by India’s Central Crime Branch on Saturday, a 40-year-old Nepalese man named Shambhu Babugiri was detained.
Police also rescued the youth of Nepal who was at a Chikkajala hotel in Bangalore, the reports stated.
Through luring them with work, Shambhu reportedly tried to send nine Nepalese youth to the Maldives.
Indian authorities alleged that by offering them employment in the Maldives, Shambhu Babugiri had taken INR 300,000 each from the victims.
India’s The Hindu cited Indian authorities and said Babugiri, through his associate R.P. Sharma, used to take the candidates to the Maldives and hand them over to his contacts, who would confiscate their travel documents and force them to do menial jobs without pay.
Officials were warned about the actions of Babugiri when the Immigration officials captured a group of young people who had recently gone to the Maldives and sent them back to Bangalore, the study said. Officials were working to find associates of Babugiri.
The number of illegal expatriates in the Maldives is reported to reach 60,000. Although this is the official figure, it is believed that the unofficial number is twice the amount.
The government has established a “National Task-force on Issues Related to Migrant Workers” to address and resolve issues pertaining to migrant workers.
One of the task force’s measures requires a system of regularisation to track irregular expatriates. The task force has also postponed for a period of another year taking in more staff from Bangladesh.
