Minister Waheed Reveals That 21 Requests to Extend Resort Development Period Has been Submitted

Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed revealed that the requests to extend the periods allocated for resort development in 21 islands have been submitted to the ministry.

Speaking at a press conference, Minister Waheed stated that construction work at 70 islands which were leased for resort development has been halted. However, the request for extension will be processed soon. He also noted that a study will be conducted to analyze the remaining islands before proceeding to make a decision.

According to a previous statement by the minster, developments in some islands had been halted for more than 10 years.

He assured that the government will not let leased islands sit idle and that legally feasible steps would be taken in the future.

There are currently 150 resorts operating in the Maldives and 140 more are being developed.
